In praise of slow tools

[DRAFT] A mechanical keyboard doesn't make me faster. That's the point.

[DRAFT — starter article, replace with the real thing.]

A mechanical keyboard does not make me type faster. The Vespa is slower than the car. Neither is about speed. They’re about staying in contact with the thing I’m doing instead of skating across the top of it.

Friction as a feature

The fast path optimizes the maker out of the loop. Sometimes that’s right. But when I’m trying to think, a little resistance keeps my hands and my head in the same place at the same time.

Choosing where to be fast

I’m not against speed. I’m against being fast everywhere by default. Pick the two or three places where slow makes the work better, and let the rest be quick.
